EdFringe Review – It is a truth at PQA Venues

It is a truth’ is Jaleelah Galbraith one woman show. It is a feminist stand up comedy about a woman, Jayde, trying to sort her love life through online dating, speed-dating and Jane Austen.

It starts with the explanation of why Jane Austen is BAE, Best above all, but it fails to explain how her writing is relevant to today’s life. The idea of linking Jane Austen with Beyonce and the modern dating scene is interesting and sounds like a great premise, but the show seems to stay too much on the surface, resulting in cliches jokes. Most of them are funny, but it feels like Jaleelah could have gone deeper in exploring how Jane Austen could help a modern woman navigate society’s expectation.

Jaleelah Galbraith is a good performer. Her presence fill the stage with confidence and warmth, and I’m sure that with some more work on the material, she’d be capable of a cracking good show.

‘It is a truth’ is on daily at 5pm at PQA Venues, Riddles Court until Aug 27th.

Venue: PQA at Riddles Court, EH1 2PG
