EdFringe Review – The FlyBoys at Gilded Baloon Rose Theatre
Imagine a night where Pharrell Williams croons with Judy Garland, Ricky Martin scats with Cab Calloway, and Maroon 5 groove with Ella Fitzgerald, that’s the night that awaits you at the Guilded Baloon Rose Theatre. The Flyboys will conquer you with their vocals and their imaginative reinvention of modern songs.
The Flyboys are a modern swing quartet, or a ‘vintage boyband’ if you will, specialising in contemporary songs performed in the style of the old fashioned jazz and swing tunes. Their take on modern music is fascinating and makes you want to get up and dance along to their groove. It’s like hearing the most popular song of recent days, be sang by the vocal legends of the past.
It’s an evening you’ll enjoy. The four different personalities of the performers (Christopher Orton, Tim Bonser, David Luke and Jez Unwin) work well together and are a good excuse to create enjoyable jokes to move from one song to the other. Their wit, bursting energy and humour, combined with the upbeat music will put an unavoidable smile on your face.
The night I was there the audience was not an easy one to engage. It was late, it was cold and there was a general vibe of tiredness in the room. Nevertheless, the performers managed to warm up their public, and keep them entertained. Their stage experience and their confidence in their singing abilities allowed them to cheer up the room, delivering a night of great fun.
Their harmonies are perfect, and they sing them effortlessly, making it clear that the stage is their second home.
It’s definitely an evening not to miss, that will warm up the cold Edinburgh night, and will uplift your spirit, getting you in a good mood for the rest of your EdFringe night.
