“Three Queens” Brings Tudor Intrigue to Barons Court Theatre

Kibo Productions is proud to announce the debut of “Three Queens,” a captivating new play by Rosamund Gravelle, set to take the stage at Barons Court Theatre from April 23rd to May 11th, 2024. The play marks Gravelle’s first foray into theatre, following her success in poetry and prose.

Set against the backdrop of a tumultuous period in English history, February 1554, “Three Queens” unfolds on the eve of Lady Jane Grey’s execution. As the palace lies awake, the play delves into the lives and struggles of three formidable women: Queen Mary, who seeks to unify a nation divided; the future Queen Elizabeth, determined to escape her mother’s fate; and the young Queen Jane Grey, whose rebellion threatens to change the course of history.

Told in real-time over one sleepless night, “Three Queens” offers a window into the power dynamics, personal confessions, and prayers that define a critical moment in Tudor history. The narrative follows these women as they navigate their roles in a society on the brink of change, each making decisions that will echo through the ages.

The production features a talented cast of emerging actors, including Becky Black, Martha Crow, Les Kenny-Green, Premo Miriki, Sally Sharp, and Eliza Shea, under the direction of Sharon Willems. The play is further brought to life with music by Dimitri Kennaway and lighting design by Leo Bacica.

Playwright Rosamund Gravelle shares her fascination with Tudor history and the complex relationships between the women at the heart of her play. “I wanted to tell a more intimate story of younger Elizabeth I and the women in her life,” Gravelle explains. “These women were messy, vulnerable, and complicated. They actively seek power and wield it, exploring what it takes to survive, to resist, and to make heart-rendering decisions with life or death consequences.”

Director Sharon Willems praised Gravelle’s unique perspective on historical figures, highlighting the play’s ability to shine new light on these well-known women. “It’s a joy to enter the world of the play and get to know these women on this challenging night that was a turning point in all their lives,” says Willems.

“Three Queens” not only signifies Gravelle’s theatrical debut but also underscores Barons Court Theatre’s commitment to supporting new writing and emerging talent. The play is a testament to the enduring intrigue of Tudor history and the complex lives of the women who shaped it.
