SPID Theatre Adds Additional London Performances of How To Make Art That Brings Housing Justice
SPID Theatre has announced two additional performances of How To Make Art That Brings Housing Justice, the interactive production written and performed by Helena Thompson, as its London tour continues through July.
The newly added performances will take place on 22 July at Riverside Studios in Hammersmith and on 24 July at SPID Theatre’s community venue in Kensal House, Ladbroke Grove.
Created by Thompson, founder and artistic director of SPID Theatre, the 70-minute production examines the organisation’s campaign for housing justice and community investment. The work was developed over the seven years during which SPID pursued legal action against its landlord, secured restoration works for its council estate building and received recognition from the Royal Institute of British Architects, including Client of the Year and London Awards.
Presented as an interactive performance, the production combines theatre, storytelling and audience participation, concluding with a discussion and an accredited certificate intended to demonstrate learning around the use of art as a tool for social change.
According to SPID Theatre, the production explores the company’s efforts to raise £4 million for the restoration of its theatre space at Kensal House, a social housing estate located close to Grenfell Tower. The work also reflects on community-led campaigns for investment and improvements to estate housing.
The current tour coincides with the anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire and runs across a range of venues, including theatres, museums and housing estates in London between 15 June and 31 July.
SPID Theatre, founded in 2005, is an arts charity based at Kensal House in west London. The company creates productions centred on housing, community histories and social justice, with previous works including A History of Neglect, Kensington Stories, Reimagining Goldfinger, Trellick Tales, The Burning Tower and Floods, Fire and Sunshine.
The production has previously received four-star reviews from The Guardian, Everything Theatre and The Stage.
Additional performances of How To Make Art That Brings Housing Justice will take place on 22 July at 7.15pm at Riverside Studios, Hammersmith, and on 24 July at 4pm at SPID Theatre, Kensal House, Ladbroke Grove.
