Young Artists’ Summer Show 2020

On-site exhibition at the Royal Academy: Dates to be announced in due course. 

The Young Artists’ Summer Show is now in its second year at the Royal Academy of Arts: online in July 2020 and on-site later in the year. Supported by philanthropist Robin Hambro, it is open to all primary and secondary level students aged 5-19 (key stages 1-5) in the UK and those attending British International Schools. It provides a platform for the high quality and wide range of work produced by students, an opportunity to champion the importance of art in education and to celebrate the teachers who are fostering creativity in young people.

The Royal Academy is committed to enabling young people to discover, develop and harness their imagination and skills as makers and the Young Artists’ Summer Show will showcase their work and celebrate their voices. Students can enter their artworks via digital submissions in any media. These works will be judged by a panel of expert judges. They will make a selection of works for an online exhibition which will open on the 12 July 2020 and a further number of works will be chosen for exhibition at the Royal Academy – dates to be confirmed.

The judging panel for primary-level artworks will be Royal Academician Bob and Roberta Smith, Director of Collections & Learning at the Royal Academy Rebecca Lyons and RA Schools students Sofía Clausse and Millie Layton. The judging panel for secondary-level artworks will be Royal Academician Cathie Pilkington, Curator and Head of the Royal Academy Schools, Eliza Bonham Carter and RA Schools students Catinca Malaimareand James Lomax.

Prizes will be awarded to two inspiring artworks from each key stage and the winning students will receive a free practical workshop for their school, as well as a £50 art voucher for themselves. Additionally, there will be an opportunity for members of the public to vote for their favourite artwork in a People’s Choice Award, and the two winners from this will receive the same prizes.

Since the Royal Academy’s foundation in 1768, arts education has been at its heart. The Young Artists’ Summer Show enables the Royal Academy to support art teachers and students, raising their visibility within the school community and beyond and to recognise and acknowledge the importance of a strong art programme in primary and secondary schools.

Robin Hambro said, “This is the second year of the very successful Young Artists’ Summer Show and already entries are arriving. It is such an important exhibition of artworks from young people, and the standard is very high. The enthusiasm for this exhibition shows how important art is for young minds and must always be a part of their educational life.”

Bob and Roberta Smith RA said, “I am really looking forward to seeing the inventive and imaginative images of the young people who submit their work.”

Submissions
Teachers are required to register their school so that teachers, parents and students can submit students’ artworks for consideration. Each student can submit images of up to three artworks for judging. The deadline for submissions is Friday 24 April 2020. For more information please visit: roy.ac/youngartists
