Review – Sex Magick
Review by Andreea Helen David.
This play is mental! It grabs you by the…and takes you into Cosmos or was it Ether? You have to be very grown up about it!
A horror comedy, Sex Magick is a combination of mockery of our societal foibles, spirituality and a lot of sex talk…and some phallic looking objects.
We have Amelia (played by Natasha Zierhofer) who, because of obsession and insecurity, a lethal combination, employs everything else but common sense to get the man of her dreams, Julian (Alexander Hayden James Smith) not Jeff Goldblum. Enter Luna the spiritual healer, who is everything else but a healer, throw in room mate Jo, obsessed with scales and a decent bloke, Julian ( as insecure) that ends up shouting he hates one of his anatomical parts ( is not his leg!) and you have a mess…but what a fun mess. Could Amelia sort it?
The play is written by Natasha Zierhofer, who has a way with words and a great critical eye, directed by Shiela Macabre, her first ever.
All actors are extremely courageous, exposing their souls and sometimes their chests and at such proximity to the audience, is an admirable feat specially in the close quarters of Barons Court Theatre.
Anca Vaida is the glue that holds the narrative together, her presence, comedic timing is flawless and at times she is quite scary. It is clear she knows her character very well! What a pleasure to watch. Natasha, the writer and producer of this play had a lot on her plate and she delivered, the play is attentively constructed and the characters are well defined.
Very brave choices from all of the creatives involved, quite a few moments when it could go wrong but it doesn’t…it must be all that Sex Magick!
