Miles Apart Together – Paper Smokers’ new show at the Etcetera Theatre
Miles Apart Together (a work in progress) is the new production by theatre collective Paper Smokers. After the success of Diary of an Expat at the last Edinburgh Fringe (read our review here), this new show will focus on the stories of three exceptional women: Annie “Londonderry” Kopchovsky, Bessie Coleman and Junko Tabei.
From going around the world on a bicycle to doing spectacular airshows or climbing the highest mountains on earth, these women fought the prejudice and scepticism that surrounded them. Their achievements became milestones in the path towards women’s rights and freedom, challenging the assumption that the “fairer sex” lacks the physical and mental stamina for big deeds. But their adventures were as breathtaking, spellbinding and phenomenal as their male counterparts. Where are their stories now? In Miles Apart Together Annie “Londonderry” Kopchovsky, Bessie Coleman and Junko Tabei finally step into the spotlight.
Still today men are encouraged to explore, be bold and adventurous. But girls are still encouraged to be quiet and good. A woman’s achievement is still today evaluated differently from a man’s achievement. We easily acknowledge that a man has done something but would always question a woman’s achievement. Still today women have to work twice as hard as men to get the recognition they deserve.
The company is also running a crowfunding campaign. Support them here.
