Lorca’s Blood Wedding at Omnibus Theatre

Celebrated Spanish dramatist Federico García Lorca’s classic tragedy of familial conflict and fated love is pulled into sharp focus in this seductive and urgent re-imagining, and opens Omnibus Theatre’s Autumn/Winter 2018 season.

A reimagined modern day version of celebrated Spanish dramatist Federico Garcia Lorca’s Blood Wedding will be staged for three weeks from 4 – 23rd September in London. The adaptation has been written and will be directed by George Richmond-Scott, a Londoner of Spanish heritage, who is currently the associate director on West End hit musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.

This adaptation, told through a female lens, shines a light on London’s Spanish community and explores cultural divisions in response to the current socio-political climate. George has brought a solid creative team on board. The play will be told in a bold, physical style with movement director Patricia Suarez working with a strong and diverse cast and originally composed music interwoven into the contemporary style scenes.

The seven-strong cast includes award-winning actor Maria de Lima (NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND and ALMEIDA THEATRE), Yorgos Karmalegos (Founder of TMESIS THEATRE COMPANY and COMPLICITÉ collaborator) and Racheal Ofori (playwright and poet PORTRAIT produced by FUEL and SO MANY REASONS headliner at CALM DOWN DEAR FESTIVALCPT).

Think it’ll get better? You know it’s a lie.
We’re burning up inside and it’s destroying us both.

What happens when it’s too late to escape – then you open the door and run?
Will fate cut you down? Will you ever breathe easily again?

Set in modern day London in the heart of the capital’s Spanish community, this contemporary adaptation of passion and vendetta explosively blends grit, fate and claustrophobia, with a streak of dark humour. Performed in a bold physical style with original live music and movement, the play also explores cultural divisions and the power of community, told through the female lens.

Blood Wedding has been adapted and directed by George Richmond-Scott (associate director on Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, Apollo Theatre). The creative team also includes movement director Patricia Suarez, dramaturg Fay Lomas, award-winning lighting director Jack Weir and Offie nominated sound designer Daniel Balfour (Great Apes, Arcola). The Blood Wedding set will be designed by Christianna Mason (Acid Test, Cockpit Arts and Secret Cinema). Casting will be announced soon.

George Richmond-Scott said:

Directing a modern adaptation of Blood Wedding has been a long-held ambition of mine, an opportunity to explore Lorca’s classic through a new lens and what that means in the context of a modern urban world; reinventing his poetry to express the wants of city dwellers in 2018. We have developed a strong physical language that explores this deeply whilst honouring the original.
