EdFringe Reviews – Decibels at Paradise in the Vault
It’s refreshing to see so many new female writers presenting their work at this edition of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and Elaine Fellows’ Decibels is one of the best this year.
It’s the story of Stephanie, a young girl who moved to London for a fresh start. Her life is a string of misfortunate events and funny situations that unfold in front of our eyes. The staging is simple but effective, and Elaine’s acting has a genuine quality to it that draws the audience in and gets them on her side. She is an irresistible, modern Brigdet Jones who’s trying to make sense of her teens, and is finding her way towards adulthood. She’s trying to find what’s missing from her life, taking us on a journey to explore how we deal with loss.
The writing is good. It is in fact very good. It’s fresh, light and yet it deals with very important matter. It has a solid structure that jumps from comedy to drama effortlessly. It’s a show that will make you smile and think. Elaine Fellows is able to read the room and also to engage a cold and difficult audience, like the one I was part of.
Elaine Fellows (writer and performer), Grace Taylor (director), and Joanne Blunt (producer) have brought on stage a delicate piece of new writing that explores a relatable topic in a original way, and we look forward to see what else they’ll create in the future.
The company is also raising funds for The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. You can give them your support here: https://www.clatterbridgecc.nhs.uk/charity/home
