Storyline Overview In an enchanting journey set against the backdrop of a mysterious forest, Hansel and Gretel, two adventurous siblings, find themselves on a quest for strawberries only to stumble upon a fairy-tale world of danger and delight. As the night falls, they discover a chocolate house owned by a seemingly kind witch with sinister motives. To escape, they must outsmart their captor and break a spell that has trapped many before them.
Stellar Cast and Creatives This production features the talents of Kate Lindsey and Heidi Stober, who make their captivating debuts at The Royal Opera. The production is brought to life under the baton of debutant conductor Giedrė Šlekytė and the imaginative direction of Antony McDonald. The magic of Engelbert Humperdinck’s score, which beautifully blends folk tunes with operatic majesty, is a highlight of the show.
A Tribute to the Brothers Grimm Rooted in the rich folklore tradition preserved by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, the opera presents a tale that continues to enchant audiences just as it did when first published in 1812. The opera, with its hauntingly beautiful ‘Evening Prayer’ and other melodic pieces, pays homage to these storytelling pioneers.
A Unique Operatic Tradition In a nod to operatic history, the role of Hansel is performed by a female singer, continuing the tradition of trouser roles that began in the 17th century. This production not only preserves this historical aspect but enhances it with a modern sensitivity.
Family-Friendly Opera Originally crafted by Humperdinck’s sister Adelheid Wette as a simple play for children, Hansel and Gretel has evolved into a full-scale opera that appeals to all ages, making it a perfect family outing.
Accessibility at the Opera The Royal Opera House ensures accessibility through features like lift access, step-free routes, and a variety of accessible performances, including Audio Described and Relaxed options. English surtitles make it easy for everyone to follow the story.
