Dark Comedy “Unlikely: In a Building with a Broken Lift” Returns to London’s Barons Court Theatre
London audiences are invited into a surreal and unsettling world this March as Unlikely: In a Building with a Broken Liftarrives at the Barons Court Theatre for a limited run from 17 to 21 March 2026.
Presented by Dippy Egg Theatre, the production returns to the stage following a successful appearance at GrimFest last year. Blending dark comedy with surreal tension, the play places two strangers together in a claustrophobic setting where politeness, paranoia and something far stranger slowly begin to collide.
Written by Lucy Mynard and Emma Wallace, the story unfolds inside Flat 17B during a stormy night. What begins as an awkward cohabitation between two unlikely housemates soon spirals into something more unsettling, as humour gives way to an eerie atmosphere that lingers beneath the surface.
At the centre of the story are Sam and Georgia — two sharply contrasting personalities forced into close quarters. Sam, played by Wallace, appears relentlessly friendly and upbeat, a Canadian whose politeness borders on unsettling. Opposite her is Georgia, portrayed by Mynard, a deadpan British goth whose dark aesthetic hints that her secrets may run deeper than appearances suggest.
As the night unfolds, the pair’s uneasy dynamic shifts between absurd comedy and creeping psychological tension. Beneath the jokes, strange rituals, and sharply observed character quirks, something more mysterious begins to seep through the cracks of the flat — and perhaps through the characters themselves.
The production is directed by Leo Bacica, who brings the script’s blend of humour and unease to life within the intimate setting of Barons Court Theatre. The venue’s close proximity between performers and audience heightens the play’s atmosphere, allowing every awkward silence and unsettling moment to land with intensity.
Behind the production is Dippy Egg Theatre, a company founded in 2024 by Mynard and Wallace following their training at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. The company was created with the aim of challenging traditional typecasting and embracing bold, imaginative storytelling.
Their work draws heavily on clowning, movement-led performance and physical theatre techniques, creating productions that thrive on unpredictability and playful experimentation. With Unlikely: In a Building with a Broken Lift, that spirit translates into a show that moves fluidly between comedy and something far darker.
Running for 60 minutes with no interval and recommended for audiences aged 14 and above, the production promises a theatrical experience that is at once funny, strange and quietly haunting.
Performances take place nightly at 7:30pm from Tuesday 17 March to Saturday 21 March 2026 at the Barons Court Theatre, located beneath the Curtain’s Up Pub on Comeragh Road.
For theatre-goers looking for something unusual — where humour meets the surreal and nothing is quite as it first appears — the door to Flat 17B is about to open. The only question is whether you’ll take the stairs… or risk the broken lift.
