Critically Acclaimed “For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Hue Gets Too Heavy” Returns to the West End
In response to overwhelming audience demand, Ryan Calais Cameron’s award-winning production “For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Hue Gets Too Heavy” is set to make a triumphant return to London’s West End. The play, previously celebrated for its sold-out runs and critical acclaim, will be featured at the Garrick Theatre from February 29th to May 4th, 2024.
Inspired by Ntozake Shange’s seminal work “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Enuf,” Cameron’s play is a profound exploration of the experiences of young Black men. The narrative weaves together themes of fantasy and reality, creating a tapestry of stories that range from fatherhood and fashion to love, loss, and resilience.
The play has been noted for its dynamic combination of music, movement, storytelling, and verse, culminating in a powerful portrayal of six young Black men engaging in group therapy. Through this setting, they share their dreams, struggles, and triumphs, offering audiences a heartfelt and imaginative journey.
Cameron, both the playwright and Artistic Director of Nouveau Riche, conceived the play in the wake of Trayvon Martin’s tragic death in 2012. Over the last decade, the piece has evolved, incorporating insights from young Black men and mental health groups. This collaborative process has brought authenticity and depth to the production.
The upcoming season at the Garrick Theatre, following its previous success at the New Diorama Theatre, the Royal Court Theatre, and the Apollo Theatre, will include 25% of all tickets priced at £25 or under. The initiative is part of the Royal Court’s commitment to making theatre accessible and inclusive, particularly for youth and community groups.
The production team includes set designer Anna Reid, lighting designer Rory Beaton, sound designer and composer Nicola T Chang, and movement director Theophilus O. Bailey. The cast for this run will be announced in due course, continuing the tradition of showcasing emerging talent.
“For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Hue Gets Too Heavy” has not only garnered critical acclaim but also attracted notable fans including John Boyega, David Harewood, Daniel Kaluuya, and Letitia Wright. Its return to the West End is a testament to the enduring impact and relevance of the production.
Tickets for the show are now available, with a range of pricing options to ensure accessibility. For more information or to book tickets, visit the Garrick Theatre’s website or contact the box office directly.
This return to the West End marks another significant milestone for a play that has already made a profound impact on the theatre landscape, continuing its conversation with audiences about life, love, and the complexities of the human experience.
